The story covers Maggie Clarke's upbringing in the tenements close to the docks. Left to look after her family when their mother runs out on them, Maggie works in a factory to support them, marrying her childhood sweetheart at 19, and starting her own family. After her husband goes missing and her brother is killed in the war, she starts afresh. But with eight children, her first husband returning demanding a divorce, and her new husband drinking away what little money they have, she only gets by with the help of others. |
